SADC Model Laws on data protection, e-transactions and cybercrime

Regulatory harmonisation on data protection, e-transactions and cybercrime in the Southern African Development Community (SADC)

The Harmonisation of ICT Policies in the Sub-Saharan Africa (HIPSSA) project was part of a global initiative by the ITU and the European Commission (EC) to harmonise policies in regional ICT markets. A set of three Model Laws were produced under HIPSSA for the SADC region, covering Data Protection, Electronic Transactions and Electronic Commerce, and Computer Crime and Cybercrime. The Model Laws, along with other regional instruments and global treaties - such as the AU's Malabo Convention, the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation and the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime - have influenced legislation adopted in SADC member states.

As an example from Part VII of the Model Law on Data Protection below, a data subject has the right to access "information about the basic logic involved in any automatic processing of data relating to him/her in case of automated decision making".
